Anthurium crystallinum is a tropical collector's aroid known for its large, heart-shaped, velvety leaves and strongly contrasting silver veins. Its leaves become larger as the plant matures, making it an excellent example of an Anthurium grown primarily for its striking foliage.
Native to the tropical forests of Central America and northern South America, Anthurium crystallinum belongs to the Araceae family. Its heart-shaped leaves emerge soft and often lighter in colour, becoming thicker and distinctly velvety as they mature. The main veins become very prominent, creating the characteristic silver contrast.
The plant grows from a short stem and is generally self-supporting. Over time, the leaf stalks lengthen and the leaves become larger, gradually requiring more space around the pot.
Water when the top few centimetres of the potting mix begin to dry. Consistent moisture is useful during growth, but the mix must remain very airy. Moderately humid air helps young leaves unfurl and reduces drying at their edges.
Use an airy aroid mix containing bark, coconut fibre, organic matter and a mineral component. Increase pot size gradually and avoid packing the mix tightly around the roots.
Bright indirect light encourages thick leaves with clearly defined veins. Avoid intense direct sunlight, especially on the velvety foliage. Leave enough room around the plant as its leaves become larger.
Avoid leaf-shine products and repeated rubbing: the velvety texture is part of the plant's appeal. When a new leaf unfolds, allow it to firm up naturally before handling it.
The velvety leaves and leaf stalks are carefully protected before transport, and the pot is secured. The shipping method is adapted to the size of the plant and its destination.
Why are the veins so visible?
The pale, silver veins are a distinctive natural feature of this species.
Will the leaves grow larger?
Yes. They become considerably larger with maturity and suitable growing conditions.
Does it need high humidity?
Moderately humid air is beneficial, but an airy potting mix remains essential.
